I was too embarrassed to wear this qipao before...I don’t know why? When living in China, a Chinese friend encouraged me to try on a qipao. She’d never seen a foreigner wear one and really thought it would suit my figure. We went back to her coffee shop, where she also sold products by local artists, and we found this dress. I felt beautiful in it, and she encouraged me to buy it, convinced it would be perfect for my growing baby. I didn’t wear it while stateside but have since brought it out because China and Chinese is inextricable from my journey and this gorgeous dress reminds me of happy days in Chongqing and elegant women I admired in Asia. You can’t wear a qipao without wondering about the culture behind it. Why is this form, or these colors so prominent? Fashion, like language, speaks volumes about a culture and, personally, I save - dive in!
