Oh Puerto Rico!
Back when I had no idea how to use a filter and I got to rock these sweet shorts to work🙈
This is me in 2015 when I lived in Puerto Rico. Before I moved I was working at a restaurant in Minnesota and asked for 3 months off to teach yoga in a surf camp in Costa Rica > lead a yoga retreat > go to a friends wedding in Tahoe > work in a hostel on the Appalachian trail.
The restaurant told me I could go but said after 3 months I’d need to come back and reapply for my job - if it was still available. I figured if I need to apply for my old job in Minnesota I might as well moved to Puerto Rico and apply for a new one there... right?
This was the beginning of my nomadic lifestyle.
I connected with an old yoga student‘s family who lived in Puerto Rico and after a 45 min phone call they offered to let me stay with them while I figured out where I would live!
This family is now my family.
I ended up finding a job at a hotel restaurant and a place to live with a co-worker and lived there for 8 months. I worked HARD to save my money, often closing and working doubles. BUT on my off days, I was exploring every inch of the islands and meeting up with random tinder bro’s to practice Spanish and have someone to go on adventures with. *Pro tip, ALWAYS meet your date, don’t let them pick you up.
When I arrived in Puerto Rico I had less than $3k but stayed with the family and in hostels for a bit, ate cheap food, found a job as quickly as I could and worked hard when I got my job.
I’m telling you this because changes in life are scary (even now🤰). But if you’re all in and you make decisions that feel aligned and act without hesitation everything will work out.
If you’re struggling with this idea ask yourself, what is the worst than can happen? For Puerto Rico it was that I wouldn’t find a job and I’d have to move back home to find one there. Would people judge me for failing? I didn’t give a flying fack. I was willing to do it because the risk was worth the reward. Often times the worst case scenario doesn’t happen, just a pivot to a new path you wouldn’t have found without taking the leap.
